The final set of UEFA Euro 2012 Qualifying games set for this International Break take place, with 5 teams per group in some cases, teams will have to play two matches as is the case here. Austria, fresh off a 2-0 loss to Belgium travel to Istanbul to take on Turkey.

Turkey currently is 4th place in Group A on 6 points, but only 1 point separates them from what would be a three way dog fight for the second automatic qualifying place. Under the management of Coach Guus Hiddink this team has done decently well thus far, but a shocking 1-0 loss to lowly Azerbaijan is what puts them in this position. Hiddink has brought a more controlled style of play to a team that is already very talented; more goals seem to be coming through the midfield from the likes of Hamit Altıntop and Arda Turan and the team looks to be a lot more patient and wise then the fun but undisciplined side that became every supporters “second team” during Euro 2008. The player to keep an eye on for me is Nuri Şahin, he is a “Mr. Everything” in midfield and is really starting to gather a lot of attention with his play for club side Borussia Dortmund in Germany. I personally have a soft spot for the Turkish National team because they lose out on a lot of players who are either German-born Turks or Turkish players that gain German citizenship and play choose to play for Die Mannschaft. They have managed to keep Nuri Şahin and they will be glad they did as he gets better and better with each passing game.

As for Austria, they are coming off a 2-0 loss to Belgium and although the score line doesn’t indicate how well the game was played it still puts the two teams level on 7 points. Austria had the advantage in Shots, Corners, Fewer Fouls Committed, Bookings and Possession but didn’t lead in the one stat that counts most. Coach Dietmar Constantini will hope the quick turnaround will focus the team and give them an advantage over their opponents, however he will be without three key players in all three phases as Defender Franz Schiemer, Midfielder Zlatko Junuzović as well as captain and Forward Marc Janko are all out due to injury and with no new players likely to be called up it makes the team short handed. This puts pressure on the likes of Marko Arnautović, Erwin Hoffer and Martin Harnik to step up and not only provide goals but a general spark to an undermanned side.

Although I like Turkey to win the game my pick is the UNDER in this match, being short handed I don’t believe Austria will attack with such verve and while Turkey are an improving side their forwards (with the acceptation of Semih Şentürk) haven’t exactly been lighting it up for club or country.
